After washing her face and brushing her teeth, Zoey brushes her hair out, then quietly walks down the hall to peek out in the living room to make sure the girls are still laying on the couch and not getting into anything they shouldn’t be. She’s relieved to see they’re curled up on their sides with the blankets tucked under their chins with their eyes closed.

When she comes back into Megan’s bedroom, she finds her beautiful girlfriend sitting up in bed with the covers pulled up to her waist. She’s still dressed in her pajamas but looks like she’s ready for whatever Zoey wants, whether it’s sleep or making love. And as Zoey climbs under the covers on her other side, she can’t decide which she wants because she’s so damn tired.

But before she can consider her options, Megan softly asks, “Are you ready to tell me what’s bothering you?”

With a sigh, Zoey sinks down to lay on her side facing Megan and Megan does the same to be at eyelevel with her. Zoey lightly caresses Megan’s cheek, then layers her hand over hers on the bed between them.

“I had it out with a nasty woman at the last rest stop.” Megan’s brow furrows as she waits a few moments for Zoey to explain further. “She looked like she was around my age, maybe a little older, but probably not more than mid-forties, and she made a comment to another woman about me bringing Harris into the women’s bathroom. “What did she say?”

“She said something about being sick and tired of mothers bringing boys into the women’s bathroom and why can’t the fathers bring them into the men’s room. I should have just ignored her, but I was so tired and it just really cut me like a knife. I asked Erin to help Harris, then I turned to the woman and told her off. I told her that she needs to keep her thoughts to herself because she has no idea what other people’s life situations are. She got all huffy and red faced and was about to say something, but when I told her that his father was killed in a car accident, she shut right up. I told her that her comments are harmful, but bringing a four-year-old boy into the bathroom hurts no one. She didn’t even have anything to say to that. She just stared at me in shock. It was such an ignorant thing for her to say. She has no idea what people have suffered.”

Megan pulls her hand out from under Zoey’s and swipes her thumb under her eyes, brushing tears away.

“She has no idea that their parents were killed. And that I lost my baby sister. Why are people so quick to judge? I know sometimes the father is in the picture and the mother still brings their young sons into the women’s bathroom with them. But, so what? They’re just little boys. Who are they going
